IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The SA Video & Film Collection was reviewed in 2005/2006.  During this time statistical data was collected and analysed.  A paper outlining the review findings was sent to the public library network for consultation.  Very few responses were received, and were included in the final paper presented to the Libraries Board in August 2006.

The Libraries Board endorsed the paper which contained the following recommendations:

  • That the SA Film & Video Collection module cease to operate on P2 and that the collection be dispersed to South Australian libraries

  • That Public Library Services (PLS) investigates new technologies to deliver training & educational audio visual materials to public libraries

The State Library of SA identified approximately 100 items to be included as part of their South Australiana preservation program.  These items are now in the safekeeping of the State Library and will be digitised and accessible in due course whilst being preserved for posterity.

Over 8500 items from the collection were dispersed to various public libraries in Jan/Feb 2007.  These videos and DVDs are now available via the effective interlibrary loan network.

During the review process it was recognised that items pre-1994 may be of cultural significance.  Stage II of the review process March - May 2007 involves the engagement of an independent consultant to determine the significance of the remaining collection.

It is anticipated that a suitable organisation will be found to keep the collection intact, whilst allowing interested members of the public access to the items.

Since Jan 2007 the borrowing of 16mm film items has been maintained by PLS for the users of this specific format.  Telephone bookings will be allowed of the 16mm films, until alternative arrangements are finalised.
